Blarney Castle in County Cork is home of the world famous Blarney Stone,. The popular myth goes that anyone who kisses the Blarney stone shall attain the "gift of the gab" or the ability to talk like the Irish. Originally dating back to AD1200 the current castle and keep were built around AD1446. The castle has changed hands numerous times throughout its history until the current owner took over from his father.
The more modern house also located on the grounds was rebuilt in 1874 after a fire destroyed the original. The Rock of Cashel was for many years the seat of the Kings of Munster and is also known as "Cashel of the Kings". Located on a large outcrop (reputedly taken from "the devils bit" some 30km away) close to the modern Cork-Dublin road, this collection of medieval building and architecture is one of the most impressive examples of Celtic art and fortification in Europe.
The oldest of the Cashel buildings were built around AD1100 with some of the more modern buildings dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The Kings of Munster ruled here for several hundred years until the Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century. Clonmacnoise (Gaelic for "Meadow of the sons of Nós) was founded in 544AD by St. Ciarán. Famed throughout Europe as a centre for religious learning, trade and craftsmanship this monastery flourished from the 6th until its decline in the 12th century. It contains the ruins of grave slabs, three high crosses, seven churches, two round towers and a cathedral.
Due to the expansion of the nearby town of Athlone and its significance as a river crossing point Clonmacnoise had a slow decline starting in the 12th century until its final demise in the 16th century. With over a 1000 years of continued occupation it played a significant role in many historic Irish events and was even visited by a modern pope.
